I threw these out today.

It seems like the obvious thing to do when something no longer works unless you’re in denial.

It’s so silly, but with pens I often think, I don’t want to throw it away because WHAT IF IT COMES BACK TO LIFE?

Today held a few moments of God searching my heart. He dug out some things— 6 in particular (all rooted in some sort of fear) that have been buried, yet still bearing ugly fruit in my life.

What’s bearing ugly fruit in your life— a pattern of thinking? The lie that it’s up to you? The bitterness of feeling misunderstood? Fear of not having enough?Fear of getting it wrong? Attempts to control uncertainty?

They’re already dead; we just have to admit it.

So today, I threw a few things away in the form of confession and repentance. I always thought for my repentance to be genuine, it had to come with the 150% guarantee that it would never happen again. But @ericgeigerinsta once wrote that repentance is coming to God with a heart not hiding behind blame or bargain.

So, my encouragement to you today— throw away 1 thing that is dead. In that newly empty space, invite the Holy Spirit to have a few more feet of square footage in your heart. Let’s make room.

I’m so smooth— did this last night.

Why is there sugar all over the counter?

We would both probably say, because I knocked over. Obviously.

But if the container was empty or filled with water, the outcome would’ve been different.

If it were filled with water, it would be water on the table.

If it were empty, nothing would’ve spilled.

When life bumps up against us, whatever is inside spills out.

There’s sugar on the counter because there was sugar in the container.

This is an ugly realization for me because it points to the fact that being “knocked over,” doesn’t CREATE stuff within me; it simply UNCOVERS it.

Today, I urge you sisters, if you’ve been “bumped” and what has come out is not the most lovely— anger, fear, comparison, criticism… trade seeking out who to blame for the bump (whether that is you or another) for a moment of honest confession with the Lord.

LORD, this mess just came out. Thank you for revealing what is inside. It’s been here all along. What do you want me to do with it?

Instead of covering up, trade up.

We get to come uncovered because we are already clothed with Christ. Give Him your spill and ask Him to replace it with His filling. “A good person produces good out of the good stored up in his heart. An evil person produces evil out of the evil stored up in his heart, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” (Luke 6:45)

ASK.

This past weekend a young woman shared on ongoing struggle with me. I asked her, “What do you want to ask God to do in this?” Her expression suggested she hasn’t considered the possibility. She was simply living with it.

When we carry our own burdens we forget that he has invited us to cast them on Him and come to Him with them.

We do the asking, He does the answering— yes, no, or wait.

My 3 kids each requested 1 cookies AND 1 pretzels from my travels which presented a math problem with only 4 plane ride.

I did the simplest thing — when the flight attendant asked if I wanted cookies OR pretzels, I asked if I could have BOTH, twice.

She could’ve said no. She could’ve judged me for being an airplane snack glutton.
Except the answer was YES, twice.

What’s weighing in you today? What thought patterns are toying with your faith?

What thing are you simply dealing with alone forgetting that as a child of God, blood-bought by Jesus, you have the privilege of boldly approaching Him to ask.

It’s funny... asking is the way to receive. And asking with boldness is also proof of our faith, that we believe what we have received is ours.
