Is it okay to grow slow? [and how to keep it steady]

It’s an absolute joy to watch them grow. At 4 weeks and 8 years old, I don’t wish either were in a different stage than they are. I do want them to keep growing, but I don’t want either to hurry up.

I enjoy watching them grow slow.

Though growth is often slow, it can be steady. How?

1) Eat a steady stream of good spiritual food.

This little one is gaining steadily because every few hours, she eats what she needs to grow.

What are you feeding your mind right now? We could all afford to put down our phones and pick up our Bibles. Trade being entertained for being encouraged. There are 66 books to choose from— simply pick one and start reading. Talk to Him about what you’re reading.

As the old song goes, read your Bible, pray every day, and you’ll grow, grow, grow.

2) Keep asking your Father for what you need.

Children seem to be naturals at asking. My newborn asks with cries. My toddler may “ask” with misbehaviour. And my older children ask with words. But they all ask in their own way.

For adults, asking not as natural. But even as an adult, do we cease to be a child of God? Search the Scriptures— you will not find anything about the goal of our faith being independence. There is never supposed to be a point in our lives where we are so mature we no longer need to depend on Him.

We are to grow up in Christ, not grow out of Him.

Keep asking your Father for what you need— it will remind you of your dependence on Him.

Don’t despise the fact that you’re still growing.

The fact that God starts plants off as seeds and adults off as babies convinces me that He must love watching things grow; He must love to watch us grow up in Christ too.

Keep eating. Keep asking. God will take care of the growing.

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” (1 Peter 2:2, NIV)

“I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭CSB)‬‬
